Director of Photography Alex Ryle

Director of photography Alex Ryle shot his first feature film at 21. With extensive experience in all film and digital formats, primarily in drama but also with many promo and commercial credits to his name, he brings a focused, story-driven artistic approach, backed up by considerable experience.

Alex is also a skilled camera operator, with many feature credits including The Witches Hammer; Darkhunters, Web of Deceit and Hellbreeder. He was nominated three times by Broadcast magazine as Young Lighting Cameraman of the year, and his work has played in cinemas and on television screens across the world. He trained on the job and studied at the National Film School with Brian Tufano BSC, graduating as a cinematographer in 2005.

His graduation film Incomplete, a hilarious study in male angst directed by Yann Demange, won Best Short Comedy at the Illinois Film Festival 2006 and was nominated for several other awards; other shorts have been officially selected at numerous festivals including Edinburgh FF and LA Short Film Festival. His most recent short film Vendetta directed by Leo de Haan was nominated for the Fujifilm Shorts Competition 2009.

Other recent credits include the BBC's Belle de Jour, directed by Yann Demange.

Between assignments, he is a regular guest tutor at the National Film and Television School.
